Terms of Use
Education, not advice. Expat Academy teaches how the rules work. It is not tax, legal, immigration or financial advice, and it doesn't create an adviser relationship. Check your own situation with qualified professionals in each country.
These terms cover your use of the i"Expat Academy" website, its free tools, courses, calculators, workbooks, guides and other downloads (together, "the site"). Please read them. You must agree to them, and to our Privacy Policy, to create an account. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.
1. Who we are
i"Expat Academy" is a brand of Apollo Consulting Inc., an Illinois corporation. These terms are an agreement between you and Apollo Consulting Inc.. "We", "us" and "our" mean Apollo Consulting Inc.; "you" means the person using the site.
2. Education, not tax, legal or financial advice
Everything on the site is general education. It is not tax advice, and it is not legal, immigration, investment, financial, accounting, insurance or estate-planning advice.
- No adviser relationship. We don't know your full situation, we haven't reviewed your documents, and we are not acting as your tax adviser, accountant, enrolled agent, attorney, immigration adviser, financial adviser, fiduciary or broker, in the United States or in any other country. Using the site, buying a course or contacting us doesn't create any such relationship.
- Two countries' rules. The site explains how the United States and European countries such as France, Spain and Portugal tax and regulate Americans who live abroad. Those rules are complex, they change often, and some of them, including how tax treaties apply to particular accounts, are not settled. Where we describe a choice between interpretations, we are describing the choice, not making it for you.
- Not a recommendation. Nothing on the site recommends that you move, become or stop being resident anywhere, convert, withdraw from or move any account, buy or sell any security, claim any benefit at any time, or take any other action. Examples of "moves" people make are examples, not instructions.
- Talk to qualified professionals. Before you act, check your own situation with qualified professionals in the United States and in each country involved, such as a tax adviser who prepares returns in both countries and an immigration lawyer.
- Your decisions are yours, and so are their results.
3. Estimates, figures and exchange rates
- Calculators give estimates. Every result is arithmetic based on the numbers and options you choose and on simplified rules. Real taxes, costs and outcomes will differ. The calculators leave things out, and each one says which.
- Figures are for the year stated. Tax brackets, social charges, thresholds, visa requirements and other figures are for the year shown and change every year. Check current figures with the official source before you act.
- Exchange rates change daily. Dollar and euro conversions use the European Central Bank's reference rate for the date shown, or a rate you enter. Your bank or transfer service will use its own rate and fees. Currency movements can change what life in Europe costs you in dollars, sometimes by a lot.
- Examples are made up. The people in the lessons (the Kellers, Carol and the Ortizes) are fictional.
4. Accounts
- Adults only. You must be 18 or older to use the site with an account or to buy a course.
- Accurate and secure. Give a correct email address, keep your password private, and tell us right away at expat@iapollo.com if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
- One person per account. Don't share an account or a course.
5. Buying courses
- One-time price. Courses are sold for a one-time price in US dollars, shown before you pay, with any sales tax added where required. There is no subscription and no automatic renewal.
- Access. Each course includes online access for the number of days shown on its page when you buy (currently 365 days). When access ends you can no longer open its lessons or calculators, but files you downloaded, such as the course book, workbook and guides, are yours to keep for your own use.
- Payments are handled by our payment processor, Stripe. We don't see or store your full card number.
- Prices and offers change. A price change doesn't affect what you already paid.
6. Refunds
If a course isn't right for you, email expat@iapollo.com within 14 days of buying it, while you've completed less than half of its lessons, and we'll refund the full amount to your original payment method and end your access to it. We consider other requests case by case. Nothing in these terms limits any refund right you have under the law.
7. Course materials and your license
The courses, lessons, calculators, workbooks, guides, course books and the i"Expat Academy" name are owned by Apollo Consulting Inc. and protected by copyright and trademark law.
When you enroll, we give you a personal, non-transferable license to use the materials for your own learning and your own household's planning. PDFs carry your name. You may not:
- copy, share, resell or publish the materials, or post them online;
- use them to advise, train or prepare returns for others, or in a product or service of your own, without our written permission;
- remove the copyright notice or the name stamped on a download.
8. Free tools
Anyone can use the free tools without an account. If you're not signed in, we don't store the numbers you enter: they're used only to show the results on the page. Signed in, your numbers are saved to your account so they're there next time. The free tools are education, not advice, as described in section 2.
9. Acceptable use
Please don't:
- break the law or other people's rights, or harass anyone;
- enter identifying numbers, such as Social Security, passport, tax identification, account or card numbers, into the tools or messages (the tools never need them);
- try to get into accounts, data or parts of the site that aren't yours, or test, probe or disrupt its security;
- copy the site or its content with bots, scrapers or other automated tools, or overload it;
- use the site's content to build a competing product or to train artificial intelligence models without our written permission.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules, after warning you when that's reasonable. If we close your account for another reason, we'll refund the unused part of what you paid for access.
10. Changes to the courses and the site
We update lessons, figures and tools to keep them accurate, for example when tax figures change each year. We may change, add or remove content and features, and we may retire a course; if we retire a course you paid for while your access is active, we'll give you a comparable course or refund the unused part of your access. The site may sometimes be unavailable.
11. Disclaimers
We work to keep the site accurate, but it is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We don't promise that the site will be error-free or uninterrupted, or that any tax, immigration, financial or other result will follow from using it.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Apollo Consulting Inc. and its owners, employees and contractors are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, investment losses, taxes, interest, penalties, immigration consequences or lost data, arising from your use of the site or its content, including decisions you make based on it. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site or these terms is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $50 if you paid nothing. Some places don't allow some of these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
13. Indemnity
If you break these terms or the law, or misuse the materials (for example by reselling them or using them to advise others), and that leads to a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and costs from that claim.
14. Disputes and governing law
If you have a problem, please email expat@iapollo.com first; most issues can be solved quickly. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute we can't resolve informally will be decided in the state or federal courts located in Illinois, and you and we agree to their jurisdiction. Either of us may bring a qualifying claim in small claims court instead. If you live in a country whose law gives you rights that can't be waived by agreement, these terms don't take those rights away.
15. Versions of these terms
Each version of these terms has a version number and an effective date, shown at the top. Earlier versions stay available on the site. When we publish a new version, we'll ask you to review and accept it the next time you sign in, and you won't be able to use your account until you do. If you don't agree, you can stop using the site and, within the refund window, ask for a refund. We keep a record of which version you accepted and when, as described in the Privacy Policy.
16. Other terms
These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the site. If a court finds part of them unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a part right away, we haven't given up the right to enforce it later. You can't transfer your account or these terms to someone else; we may transfer them to a company that takes over i"Expat Academy".
